After the great big success of King Kong in 1933, RKO-Radio is planing another sensation: “Kong is gonna dance in 1934,” lets David O. Selznick out smiling. “We already asked Fred Astaire to make a choreography which could be managed by Kong’s technicians.”
The famous Broadway star, recently been starring in two Hollywood musical productions, seems to take his new challenge seriously: “It might be possible to make the monster tap,” explained Mr. Astaire last Friday. “It’s only a question of precise synchronisation with the sounds of my own tap steps.” There was a rumor going around in Hollywood, Ruby Keeler might be Kong’s leading lady. “That would be too weird,” Selznik laughs. “We’re just planing another comedy with him, after the success of The Son of Kong: Kong’s grandson goes to America and becomes a star. No violence, no nudity — just a nice musical picture with Kong as principal part. Release most likely in October.”
Well, to me it still seems a bit weird. But the gentlemen Hays, Breen and the catholic Legion of Decency may be rather pleased.
Happy Easter — and hilarious April Fool’s Day (which both happen to be the same day this year)!
